QTW 40 - Enabling QTW Video Optimization (1-July-95)

Q We just purchased a laptop computer and we're wondering if QuickTime for Windows' optimize feature supports the video driver for this system. If the video chip in this computer is supported, what changes should we make to QTW.INI to enable the optimize feature?

A Unless your laptop's video chip is compatible with one of the standard video-accelerator chips (S3, Cirrus Logic, ATI, etc.), QuickTime for Windows movie playback will not be "optimized."

You can determine this by looking in the first section of the QTW.INI file for the following line:

    Video Hardware=Not directly supported

If this line is there, QuickTime for Windows is not optimized for your video chipset. If there is a "[video]" section, you may be able to turn the optimize feature on by changing the "optimize" setting, as shown below:

    [video]
    optimize={hardware|driver|bmp|raw|dib}

Of the possible settings (hardware|driver|bmp|raw|dib), hardware is the fastest and dib is the slowest. If this section or line is not there, "optimize" defaults to "hardware."

The LCD displays on laptop computers are notoriously unresponsive to rapid screen updates. Try using an external monitor, if your laptop supports one.
